ABSTRACT

Objective: To reveal the classification characteristics of college students' mental health literacy and compare their differences in professional psychological help-seeking behavior. Methods: Totally 12 850 college students were selected and assessed with the Mental Health Literacy Questionnaire (MHLQ), Self-made Questionnaire of Professional Psychological Help-seeking Behavior in Non-epidemic and COVID-19 epidemic and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Latent profile analysis was used to classify the mental health literacy of college students. The Chi-square test and logistic regression analysis were used to explore the differences in professional psychological help-seeking behavior of different classes of college students. Results: College students' mental health literacy could be divided into three classes including low-literacy group (7.4%), medium-literacy group (50.2%) and high-literacy group (42.4%). After controlling for demographic variables and depression level, logistic regression analysis found that there was no significant correlation between mental health literacy and professional psychological help-seeking behavior in non-epidemic situations. In the COVID-19 epidemic, compared with the low-literacy group, the medium-literacy group was more likely to seek professional psychological help (OR=1.32). The medium-literacy group and the high-literacy group were more likely to recommend others for help (OR=1.77, 2.45). Conclusion: The mental health literacy of college students has classification characteristics. During the COVID-19 epidemic, the college students with higher mental health literacy have greater possibility of seeking professional help and recommending others for seeking help. ABSTRACT

There is growing evidence that adolescents in high socioeconomic status groups may be at increased risk for some mental health concerns. This scoping review aims to synthesize empirical literature from 2010 to 2021 on mental health concerns and help-seeking behaviors among this adolescent group. Six comprehensive electronic databases yielded 1316 studies that were systematically reviewed in Covidence to identify relevant research. PRISMA-ScR analysis was used. Eighty-three studies met the eligibility requirements. NVivo was employed for coding, data extraction, and analysis. Key findings suggest substance use, in particular, alcohol, is the main mental health concern among adolescents in high socioeconomic status groups. Other main mental health concerns were externalizing and risk behaviors, bullying, depression, anxiety and stress. These concerns were shown to be influenced by parents, peers, school, and neighborhood contextual factors. Three emerging subgroups were identified as being at higher risk of mental health concerns among adolescents in high socioeconomic status groups. Specifically, adolescents residing in boarding schools, those with high subjective social status (e.g., popular) or low academic performance. Being pressured by parents to perform well academically was identified as a risk-factor for substance use, depression and anxiety. Albeit limited, areas explored for help-seeking behaviors centered on formal, semi-formal and informal support. Further research examining multi-level socioeconomic status factors and mental health concerns and help-seeking behaviors are urgently needed to inform appropriate interventions for this under-represented group. ABSTRACT

Background: Currently, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is recognized as a major threat to human public health. Obviously, accurate and in-depth identification of patients' help-seeking behavior not only explains the process but also is able to identify the related factors, challenges, strengths, and weaknesses, and depicts participants' expectations for optimization and improvement. Methods: This qualitative study was conducted based on content analysis and through individual interviews (in person and by phone) with people with a history of COVID-19 disease until data saturation was reached between June and September 2020 in Tehran, Iran. Findings: In this study, 15 in-depth individual interviews were conducted. Strengths, weaknesses, and strategies to improve the help-seeking behavior were extracted in four levels: individual, family, social, and health system. The most important strengths were self-care (individual level), empathy of family members (family), charitable activities (social), and human resources (health system). The most important weaknesses in these levels included lack of attention to health protocols, lack of requirements for full quarantine, economic problems, and lack of proper monitoring by the health system. OBJECTIVE: The authors aimed to evaluate changes in use of government-subsidized primary mental health services, through the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS), by young people during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia and whether changes were associated with age, sex, socioeconomic status, and residence in particular geographical areas. METHODS: Interrupted time-series analyses were conducted by using quarterly mental health MBS service data (all young people ages 12-25 years, 2015-2020) for individual Statistical Area Level 3 areas across Australia. The data captured >22.4 million service records. Meta-analysis and meta-regression models estimated the pandemic interruption effect at the national level and delineated factors influencing these estimates. RESULTS: Compared with expected prepandemic trends, a 6.2% (95% CI=5.3%-7.2%) increase was noted for all young people in use of MBS mental health services in 2020. Substantial differences were found between age and sex subgroups, with a higher increase among females and young people ages 18-25. A decreasing trend was observed for males ages 18-25 (3.5% reduction, 95% CI=2.5%-4.5%). The interruption effect was strongly associated with socioeconomic status. Service uptake increased in areas of high socioeconomic status, with smaller or limited uptake in areas of low socioeconomic status. CONCLUSIONS: During 2020, young people's use of primary mental health services increased overall. However, increases were inequitably distributed and relatively low, compared with increases in population-level mental health burden. Policy makers should address barriers to primary care access for young people, particularly for young males and those from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds.

ABSTRACT

Asian Americans (AA) in the United States, and throughout the world, commonly hold a negative connotation or stigma regarding seeking mental health services. Unique cultural stigmas and beliefs of AA play an important role when examining why this population group is less likely to engage in therapy. This article explains why these cultural stigmas and beliefs contribute to the lack of mental health help seeking. Through examining these stigmas, perception of therapy, loss of face, and parental control among AA will allow therapists to have a better understanding when they are working with this population. Also, the consideration is given of how the increase of Anti-Asian racism due to the COVID-19 pandemic affects AA and the challenges it creates. This article includes a case example that provides information on how stigmas impact an AA family who have differing cultural values and expectations while experiencing discrimination from COVID-19. ABSTRACT

Technology-facilitated gender-based violence (GBV) has become an increasing issue in recent years, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic which prompted a significant rise in online activity. In addition to amplifying traditional forms of abusive behaviours such as stalking, bullying and sexual harassment, information and communication technologies have facilitated new manifestations of violence such as image-based abuse, doxing, gendertrolling, impersonation and hacking, among others. Women, children, sexual, religious and ethnic minorities, and other vulnerable groups are particularly vulnerable to elevated risks of experiencing violence. Based on findings from a scoping review, this article discusses how certain key stakeholders - identified as technology companies, government and legal systems, and social support systems - are used in the help-seeking process by those who have experienced technology-facilitated GBV. We seek to highlight particular nuances which key actors must consider when addressing technology-facilitated GBV and summarise gaps and propose recommendations to inform policy and programming efforts in low-and middle-income countries across Asia.

BACKGROUND: Despite existing research on mental health problems during the COVID-19 pandemic, studies related to help-seeking intention for mental health, particularly in Indonesia, are limited. During this unprecedented crisis, it is important to determine help-seeking intention, to allow providers of mental health services to deliver the appropriate intervention and so as to avoid the worst scenario. The aim of this study was to determine factors predicting help-seeking intention during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHOD(S): A cross-sectional approach using questionnaires were employed. Items on sociodemographic factors were asked. Several instruments were also administered: the Fear of COVID-19 Scale, the Coronavirus Anxiety Scale, and the General Help-seeking Questionnaire. Online questionnaires were distributed via email, WhatsApp Messenger, and Facebook Messenger during the period August 11-21, 2020, yielding responses from 1340 participants (females = 971, males = 369). The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis and multiple linear regression analysis. RESULT(S): The results showed that age, education, occupation, living in an infected area, and fear were statistically significant predictors of help-seeking intention. CONCLUSION(S): Mental health services need to be equitably available for people of various sociodemographic backgrounds during the COVID-19 pandemic. To improve and strengthen help-seeking intention, providers of mental health services should consider providing appropriate services based on age, education, and occupation. They also need to take into consideration special emphasis for those who are living in infected areas, leading to them being in a state of heightened fear, which is also a predictor.Copyright © 2021 EDIZIONI MINERVA MEDICA.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Women in Oman and low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are usually diagnosed with BC at a younger age and more advanced stage, with poor five-year survival. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of breast cancer (BC) related educational programs among female Omani adolescents. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six female-only public schools were randomly selected from three governorates of Oman and assigned to the control or interventional group. An Arabic version of the Breast Cancer Awareness Measure questionnaire was used to evaluate students attending grades 10 and 11 at baseline (T0) and after 4 weeks (T1). After T0, the intervention group participated in a one-hour BC education program involving group discussions, a slideshow presentation, leaflets, and online access to program materials and videos. Non-parametric tests were used to compare scores between intervention and control groups and within each group across time (T0 vs. T1). RESULTS: A total of 1106 students participated, of which 547 (49.5%) and 559 (50.5%) were allocated to the control and intervention groups, respectively. Recognition of BC risk factors (Z = 18.67; p < 0.001) and symptoms (Z = 20.01; p < 0.001) increased significantly in the intervention group between T0 and T1 and compared to the control group at T1 (U = 27.27; p < 0.001, and U = 25.75; p < 0.001, respectively). Anticipated time to seeking medical help (Z = 18.67; p < 0.001) and barriers to help-seeking (Z = 7.91; p < 0.001) decreased significantly between T0 and T1 in the intervention group and compared to the control group at T1 (U = 15.78; p < 0.001, and U = 3.44; p = 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION: The program increased knowledge of BC risk factors and symptoms and promoted early medical help-seeking among Omani female adolescents. Healthcare strategic planners and policy-makers in Oman and low- and middle-income countries should consider incorporating cancer education programs in the national school curriculum to minimize delays in BC diagnosis and improve the survival rate.

BACKGROUND: Young adults are at elevated risks of hikikomori (severe social withdrawal) under the COVID-19 pandemic, which could lead to psychological distress and suicidal ideation. AIMS: The present study aimed to examine the associations among hikikomori, suicide stigma, suicidal ideation, and help-seeking behaviors among young adults in Hong Kong. METHOD: This study recruited a large sample of 2,022 young adults in Hong Kong via an online survey at the end of 2021. The participants completed the Hikikomori Questionnaire and validated measures on psychological distress, suicide stigma, and suicidal ideation severity and report their help-seeking behaviors. Multivariate analysis of variance was conducted to compare the profiles of the hikikomori groups. Path analysis evaluated the effects of hikikomori and suicide stigma on occurrence and severity of suicidal ideation and their associations with help-seeking behaviors. RESULTS: Hikikomori showed significant and positive indirect effects on prevalence and severity of suicidal ideation via psychological distress. Glorification positively predicted hikikomori and suicidal ideation severity among suicidal persons. Hikikomori was associated with reduced help-seeking. Isolation and suicidal ideation were associated with greater barriers to seek help among the non-help-seekers. Perceived helpfulness of sought help was negatively associated with hikikomori and suicidal ideation among the help-seekers. CONCLUSIONS: The present findings demonstrated greater prevalence and severity of suicidal ideation and less help-seeking in young adults with hikikomori. Suicide stigma showed differential associations with hikikomori, suicidal ideation, and help-seeking behaviors.

ABSTRACT

As a major virus outbreak in the twenty-first century, the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has posed unprecedented risks to global mental health. Because of the severity of the virus, people were forced to isolate themselves and confine themselves to their homes. This was linked to people's inability to work, seek help from loved ones, and participate in their communities. Stressors that contribute to anxiety and depression include loneliness, fear of infection, suffering and death for oneself and loved ones, bereavement grief, and financial worries. As a result, covid 19 is a source of psychological distress. This paper investigates the impact of these stressors on all age groups in society, including today's youth, the elderly, and even health workers. Because Buddhism has a longstanding experience with medicine and preaches calmness and acceptance of fear, it is not surprising that Buddhist ideas come to the aid of those in need during times of crisis. However, it receives little attention. Thus, this paper focuses on theories such as mindfulness meditations, engaged Buddhism, and cultivating compassion, all of which can aid in increasing positive emotions and thus reducing stressors. ABSTRACT

During times of crisis, individuals may activate members of their social networks to fulfill critical support functions. However, factors that may facilitate or inhibit successful network activation are not fully understood, particularly for structurally marginalized populations. This study examines predictors of network activation among recent and established Hispanic immigrants during the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, using unique, longitudinal data from the VidaSana study and its supplemental survey, the COVID-19 Rapid Response study (N = 400), we ask: How are COVID-related stressors associated with goal-oriented network activation (e.g., health-focused activation) among Hispanic immigrants? How might structural and compositional characteristics of social networks facilitate or inhibit successful network activation during COVID-19? Results align with theories of network activation (i.e., functional specificity) that imply that individuals engage in selective and deliberate activation of networks. That is, we observe a congruency between COVID-related stressors and social network characteristics, and distinct types of network activation. Moreover, we find that respondents experiencing pandemic-induced economic difficulties engage in activation for financial assistance only if they are embedded in a higher-educated network. We discuss the implications of these findings and provide recommendations for future research. © American Sociological Association 2023.

ABSTRACT

Using a cross-sectional survey (N = 1,225), this study examines the psychological well-being (stress, anxiety, depression), life satisfaction, supportive parent communication, and likelihood to seek mental and emotional support from different sources between FGCSs and non-FGCSs during the early period of the COVID-19 pandemic. Results show that while FGCSs and non-FGCSs report similar levels of stress and depression, FGCSs have higher anxiety and lower life satisfaction and supportive parent communication than non-FGCSs. Although supportive parent communication is negatively associated with stress, anxiety, and depression and positively associated with life satisfaction in both groups, these associations are stronger for FGCSs than non-FGCSs. Further, FGCSs are less likely to seek mental and emotional help from family and friends than non-FGCSs, while these help-seeking behaviors may mitigate their mental distress and enhance their life satisfaction. We address college mental disparity and highlight the lack of interpersonal support for FGCSs' mental wellness during this health crisis. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Globally, the COVID-19 pandemic had a huge impact on patients and healthcare systems. A decline in paediatric visits to healthcare settings was observed, which might have been due to lower incidence of injury and infectious illness, changes in healthcare services and parental concern. The aim of our study was to examine parental experiences of help-seeking for, and care of, a sick or injured child during COVID-19 lockdown periods in five European countries with different healthcare systems in place. METHODS: An online survey for parents with a child with any kind or illness of injury during COVID-19 lockdowns was circulated through social media in five European countries: Italy, Spain, Sweden, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. Parents living in one of these countries with self-identification of a sick or injured child during COVID-19 lockdown periods were eligible to fill in the survey. Descriptive statistics were used for the level of restrictions per country, children's characteristics, family characteristics and reported help-seeking behaviour of parents prior to the lockdown and their real experience during the lockdown. The free text data was subjected to thematic analysis. RESULTS: The survey was fully completed by 598 parents, ranging from 50 to 198 parents per country, during varying lockdown periods from March 2020 until May 2022. Parents who completed the survey were not deterred from seeking medical help for their sick or injured child during the COVID-19 pandemic. This finding was comparable in five European countries with different healthcare systems in place. Thematic analysis identified three main areas: parental experiences of access to healthcare, changes in parents' help-seeking behaviours for a sick or injured child during lockdowns, and the impact of caring for a sick or injured child during the lockdowns. Parents reported limited access to non-urgent care services and were anxious about either their child or themselves catching COVID-19. CONCLUSION: This insight into parental perspectives of help-seeking behaviour and care for a sick or injured child during COVID-19 lockdowns could inform future strategies to improve access to healthcare, and to provide parents with adequate information concerning when and where to seek help and support during pandemics.

ABSTRACT

After suffering interpersonal violence (IPV), women survivors can access various interdisciplinary services and programmes to guide their recovery. Nevertheless, many vulnerable women postpone seeking help, sometimes indefinitely. Motherhood especially complicates help-seeking because mothers often want to protect both the perpetrator and their children. Understanding women's resilience, resources, and capacities in surviving IPV, however, could guide the development of helpful services that women actually access. Thus, in our study, we sought to explore the agency, resources, and reinforcing survival experiences of survivors of IPV. Our data, gathered in Finland during the COVID-19 pandemic, consisted of 12 narratives of mothers told in Clinical Ethnographic Narrative Interviews that were subsequently subjected to thematic analysis. Five themes describing personal resources, motherhood, and nature were identified under the overarching metaphor of "going forward like a grandmother in the snow". Recognising the agency, resources, capacities, and coping mechanisms of women who have suffered IPV can help in developing professional outreach programmes, promoting women's early access to useful resources, and, in turn, helping them to stop the possible intergenerational transmission of violence.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Social media is playing an increasingly important role in public emergencies for help-seekers, especially during the global COVID-19 pandemic. Wuhan, China, firstly official reported COVID-19 cases and implemented lockdown measures to prevent the spread of the virus. People during the first lockdown were restricted from seeking help face-to-face. Social media is more prominent as an online tool for people seeking help, especially for patients, than in other stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the urgent needs presented in help-seeking posts in Wuhan during the first COVID-19 lockdown, the content features of these posts, and how they influenced online user engagement. METHODS: This study collected posts from Weibo posted with specific help tags during the first COVID-19 lockdown in Wuhan: from 23 January 2020 to 24 March 2020, and eventually received 2055 data, including textual content, comments, retweets, and publishing location. Content analysis was conducted, and manual coding was performed on help-seeking typology, narrative mode, narrative subject, and emotional valence. RESULTS: The result showed that help-seeking posts primarily were seeking medical (97.7%). Features of these posts were mainly adopting a mixed narrative mode (46.4%), released by relatives of patients (61.7%), and expressing negative emotions (93.2%). Chi-square tests suggested that help-seeking posts with mixed narrative modes released by relatives express more frequent negative emotions. Results of negative binomial regression indicated posts of seeking information (B = 0.52, p < .001, e0.52 = 1.68), with mixed narrative mode (B = 0.63, p < .001, e0.63 = 1.86), released by themselves (as referential groups) and with neutral emotions increased comments. Posts of seeking medical (B = 0.57, p < .01, e0.57 = 1.77), with mixed narrative mode (B = 1.88, p < .001, e1.88 = 6.53), released by people of unrelated patients (B = 0.47, p < .001, e0.47 = 1.60) and with neutral emotions increased retweets. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides evidence of what actual public demands are to be considered and addressed by governments and public administrators before implementing closure and lockdown policies to limit the spread of the virus. Meanwhile, our findings offer strategies for people help-seeking on social media in similar public health emergencies.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The spread of the Covid-19 pandemic led to a lockdown that caused a widespread discomfort among the Italian-and worlwide-population, as evidenced by several national and international studies. GliPsicologiOnline (GPO) was conceived as a reaction to this scenario of great difficulty. GPO is a free online service that aims at addressing the citizens' needs of listening and support, as well as dealing with psychoeducational issues. The aim of this study was to describe the population that has requested psychological support using the GPO platform, with particular focus on the distribution throughout Italy and the type of problems that emerged in relation to age. Furthermore, the time of onset of the specific problem reported and the type of intervention implemented by therapists of the Institute for the Study and Research of Psychic Disorders (ISeRDiP) was also taken in consideration. Method: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted with data collected by a group of ISeRDiP researchers, who were also involved as clinicians in the active phase of the project. The database allowed analysis using descriptive statistics and qualitative comparison of infra-cluster results. Results: 157 individuals joined the project (138 women, 19 men), with an average age of 29 years. 74% went through only one session (15% two, 11% three sessions). The GPO service was contacted by 15 different Italian regions with a greater participation by the Lombard population (32%). The majority of the sample (93%) did not request help for symptoms directly related to Covid-19, but rather for psychological problems that developed in the context of isolation due to lockdown. Notably, in 44% of cases, the perceived discomfort was experienced for the first (mainly of the anxious type, 19%). Strong variability in the reasons for seeking help has also emerged. Conclusions: The service offered by the GPO project gave the Italian population an opportunity to receive free support, prevent negative psychological outcome, improve psychoeducation and learn about the potential of online support services. It is not surprising that the majority of the help seeking individuals came from the Lombardy region, which was more affected than others by the pandemic. Moreover, the variability of the reasons for seeking help seems to be in line with difficulties throughout development phases and life cycle typically reported in the age group taken into consideration. In questa situazione di forte difficolta nasce "GliPsicologiOnline" (GPO), un progetto creato per rispondere gratuitamente ai bisogni di ascolto, psicoeducazione e supporto, attraverso l'utilizzo di una piattaforma online. Obiettivo del presente studio e quello di descrivere la popolazione che ha richiesto supporto psicologico attraverso l'utilizzo della piattaforma GPO, con particolare riferimento alla distribuzione sul territorio italiano e al tipo di problematiche emerse in relazione all'eta. Particolare attenzione e stata inoltre posta all'individuazione dell'epoca di insorgenza della problematica rappresentata e ai tipi di interventi di aiuto prevalenti messi in atto dai terapeuti dell'Istituto per lo Studio e la Ricerca sui Disturbi Psichici (ISeRDiP). Metodo: Sulla base dei dati e stato condotto uno studio descrittivo trasversale con raccolta dati crosssezionale da parte di un gruppo di ricercatori ISeRDiP, coinvolti anche come clinici nella fase attiva del progetto. La creazione di un database, ove sono state indicate le variabili di interesse, ha permesso di procedere a un'analisi tramite statistiche descrittive e comparazione qualitativa dei risultati infracluster. Risultati: Al progetto hanno aderito 157 soggetti, (138 donne, 19 uomini), con un'eta media di 29 anni. Il servizio GPO e stato contattato da 15 diverse regioni italiane con una maggior partecipazione da parte della popolazione lombarda (32%). La maggioranza del campione (93%) non ha richiesto aiuto per una sintomatologia direttamente connessa al Covid ma per problematiche psicologiche sviluppatesi nell'ambito dell'isolamento dovuto al lockdown;nel 44% dei casi, infatti, il disagio emerso era di nuova insorgenza (prevalentemente di tipo ansioso, 19%). E' emersa altresi una forte variabilita nei motivi della richiesta di aiuto. Conclusioni: Il servizio offerto dal progetto GPO ha rappresentato un'opportunita per la popolazione italiana di ricevere un sostegno gratuito, fare prevenzione sul danno psicologico, migliorare la cultura psicologica e conoscere le potenzialita dei servizi di supporto online. Non stupisce che la maggior richiesta di aiuto sia pervenuta dalla regione Lombardia, piu colpita di altre dalla pandemia, e la variabilita dei motivi della richiesta di aiuto che, in base alla fascia d'eta presa in considerazione, sembra essere in linea con le problematiche tipiche delle fasi di sviluppo e del ciclo di vita. ABSTRACT

In this poster, we investigate the impact of online versus in-person summer equity programs. We designed and implemented a summer bridge program from 2020 through 2022 and collected pre- and post-survey data from students to measure the program's impact on students' self-concept, science motivation, growth mindset, help-seeking and concealment attitude, science identity, and sense of belonging. Our research questions are: RQ1: How do students' indicators change from pre-survey to post-survey in the online summer program (2020 and 2021) versus the in-person program (2022) RQ2: What indicators are most impacted (positively or negatively) in an online version of the program These questions will help inform us about how to support students who have started their undergraduate programs during the COVID-19 remote instruction period and whether or not the additional cost of an in-person summer program is justifiable by its impact on students. © 2022 Owner/Author.
